Checking in on “Checking In”

So I’ve got the new computer up and running, I’m still figuring out how to work xampp so that I can host the audio for the show on my own computer. I’ve also got OpenOffice up and running so I can start writing again. I’m going over what I’ve got written for “Checking In” seeing if there was anything I missed while writing, change typos, clip out a little that doesn’t make sense anymore, etc. It will also help me get re-oriented with the story so that I can get back into where it was going. I mean, I can’t jump into a story I haven’t touched since November and expect myself to know where all the moving parts where going. So when I get back to writing I’ll keep you updated on how I’m doing, you could also start following me on Twitter to find out other things you’d like to know as far as what I do on a daily basis, or my writing process.

Coming up for air

Well I’ve been off the radar for a bit, I thought that I should do an update of sorts.

The Ex-Girlfriend Lady left for Texas last week. I’m actually living on my own now. Well, not technically. I still share the house with my mom, uncle, my cat, my uncle’s cat, uncle’s dog, and my mom’s two cats. But the point I’m trying to make is that I had no idea how much I’d gotten used to sharing a bed with someone. It’s a lot colder now that I don’t have anyone to steal warmth from.

I’ve secured employment at the Sonic Drive-in Restaurant that was just recently built in my town. I start at the first of the year.

I’ve received an advance copy of Scot Sigler’s “Contagious” for the purposes of doing a book review. I’ll post that on this blog when the time comes. And I’ll be in Winnekta, Illinois when he stops there for his book tour on January 19. You can find out more about his the times, dates, and cities of his book tour at his site.

I’ve been at Kyle’s house for the last couple of days, playing video games, drinking. All that fun stuff. Just watched “The Dark Knight” and it’s a great movie even on DVD. I suggest that you pick it up.

As far as news on “Checking In” is concerned, I was working on it the whole week before The Ex-Girlfriend Lady left, and I had somewhere between twenty and twenty-two thousand words when she left. I won’t be able to work on it further until I get another computer. But I’d have to say that I’m one-fourth of the way through the story so far. I hope to have it done by March. And I don’t know when I’ll be podcasting it. I don’t know if I want to use a windows computer and Audacity because I can afford that. Or if I want to talk myself into shelling out two grand on a Mac. I’ll probably do the former over the latter just because it’s cost effective. I really don’t know yet. But I’ll be sure to keep you updated.

“Checking In” to NaNoWriMo

From November 1st to November 30th it is NaNoWriMo. Well for the last ten years or so anyway. Oh, I’m sorry. “NaNoWriMo” is short for National Novel Writing Month.

NaNoWriMo is an event where tons of writers gather to try to write a five hundred-thousand word work of fiction during the month of November. And whether they be seasoned, new, or somewhere in between all of these novelists gather for that one goal all over the country, the world even. I heard about this last year when I started listening to P.G. Holyfield’s Murder at Avedon Hill. And this year when I caught wind of it again I decided that I’d participate.

You might be confused by this, unless you came to this blog through my mentioning it in a blog post over at the BOaC Blog.

But for all of you that don’t already know, I’m an aspiring writer. I’ve tried many times to put together a work of fiction, but I never quite finish it because I run out of steam on the project, or because i simply don’t like what I’m writing anymore.

But that is something that I cannot do with my current project. Shortly after moving to Indiana I decided to dust off my original manuscript for this project and work on it again, and then when I had regular access to a computer I decided to take my type-written manuscript and type it up on a computer and then work on it from there.

At this point in time I was wondering what people around me thought about it, so I decided to let a few people read it, those few people absolutely loved it, and passed it on. And so it began, that every week I’d have five or six people wanting more, and so I was printing chapters as I wrote them and it was all very well received. But by the end of the semester I’d hit writers block. I haven’t made much progress since then and that was about a year ago.

So therefore, I’ve decided, that for NaNoWriMo I will try my best.

By midnight on November 30th eastern standard time I will have finished my project “Checking In: Book One of the Heaven Hotel Series”. Or at least meet the 500,000 word finish line.

Wish me luck.

And if you’re interested in my project, I recorded the first fourteen chapters as bonus audio over on the BOaC Blog. You can find the audio here.

Stay tuned to this blog and I will keep you updated on my progress.
